Date Challenge | February

February 17, 2015

After our date challenge in January was a hit, the husband and I were looking forward to getting stuck into February's one which was essentially a games night. The husband, in particular, is really into different games. He loves trying out a new board game and is always on the lookout for a good (cheap) co-operative game that we can play together in the evenings and so I knew that he would love this date challenge when I wrote it back in December.

We had planned to hold our games night on Saturday but with the rather enticing offer of my mum's homemade chicken stew for dinner we instead postponed it until after the husband's training session on Sunday. It ended up being the perfect way to finish a fantastic weekend. There was some music on Spotify, a snoring dog lying beside us and a whole lot of conversation to be had. That's practically perfection to me.

I gave him most of the control in setting this one up. He chose the games: three on Xbox and three board games. On Xbox we had Madden 11 which is an American football game, Hidden in Plain Sight and Mount Your Friends. The less said about the last one the better - it's a bit, um, rude, shall we say?

Naturally I won our game of Madden when the Patriots were defeated by the Colts, 37 - 15. What can I say? I'm incredible. I barely ever lose a game, if I'm honest. Of course, I was pretty useless at Hidden in Plain Sight and *cough* Mount Your Friends and the husband won but that was okay. The real games were still to be played.

With Lost Cities, Scrabble and Dominion being our chosen board games I was definitely in with a good chance of winning this games night. Lost Cities is a card game that we took on honeymoon and would play in the bar as I sipped a mojito and fellow hotel guests looked on confused by our unusual game. It's such a straight forward game and a tonne of fun but alas, I lost. However, after a highbrow game of Scrabble with some amusing words and a game of Dominion we were sitting on equal scores having won three games each.

And so the winner was decided on points. I was victorious! But seeing as it was by less than ten points we decided to call it a draw and curl up on the couch for the rest of the night watching Zoolander and the footage from my husband's American football training.

Oh, I am looking forward to next month's date challenge already!

  1. Wow 6 games in one night?! When did you start playing? On Tuesday?!

It's not often that Kris and I play together, as I kind of hate computer games and board games but we've been playing a bit of XCom on the PC for an hour every few nights, and it's not too bad!

    1. Haha. We really love playing games so marathoning them together like that is awesome. At first I wasn't into playing games (I thought I'd be really bad at them) but now I'm usually the one asking Kami if he wants to play something!

    1. We've only done January and February dates so far but there's a whole lot more in the pipeline! It's nice to have a dedicated night/day once a month to spend time together.

  4. We don't play a lot of games (the only one of these we've tackled is Scrabble) but such a great idea for a games night. Fear I'd end up playing Call of Duty non-stop although we did recently get into a poker set someone bought us for Christmas.

    1. I quite like playing Call of Duty too but it wasn't competitive enough for games night! We definitely enjoy a good games night that's for sure. I don't really play poker but Kami likes to play with his best friends every once in a while or go to the casino with his dad as a Christmas work night out. He won enough before Christmas to buy us a new laptop so I can't complain ;)
